Crimson Chalice Judge spotlight: Liam Hearne

Crimson Chalice, the official Trench Crusade painting competition, is just a few months away, and it’s time to meet our third judge: Liam Hearne!

Liam, who you might also know as Phoenix Miniature Art, is one of the driving forces behind the Crimson Chalice, and a veteran competition judge.

We are delighted to have his experience and expertise for our first ever painting competition!

Here’s a few words from the man himself, along with his advice for Crimson Chalice participants:

Hey! I’m Liam, also known as Phoenix Miniature Art.

I’ve been active in the hobby for over 20 years, and for the last 10 years my main focus has been display painting. Over the past few years I’ve travelled all over the world attending painting competitions and hobby events, and I’m heavily involved in judging several shows here in the UK. I specialise in helping painters break into display painting and supporting hobbyists who want to push their skills to the next level.

My advice to anyone thinking about entering is not to be intimidated by the standard of some of the entries that may appear. The Crimson Chalice is about celebrating our hobby at every level, and your work will be a valuable part of the event. People genuinely love seeing a wide variety of styles, subjects, and skill levels on display.

Secondly, don’t paint for the competition. By that, I mean paint what you love, in the style you love. You won’t be penalised for painting in a particular way or using a specific style, as long as your entry fits within the competition rules. Your goal should be to create the best version of your own work and share it with the community.

I’m really looking forward to seeing all of your entries and celebrating the incredible talent within the hobby!
